Dobson Elementary School in Surry County, N.C., recently installed LED lighting systems from Acuity Brands’ Lithonia Lighting division.
The school’s 5,400-square-foot gymnasium now utilizes IBH low bay LED luminaires from Lithonia. Annual energy savings of $1,350 are expected as a result of a 50 percent reduction in energy usage. Prior to the installation, the facility used metal halide fixtures.
The previous fixtures used a significant amount of electricity because the school’s facility managers left the lights on at all times, even when the gymnasium was not in use. Due to the warm up times of metal halide commercial lighting, school administrators found it to be a hassle for the lights to be turned on and off again. With the new Lithonia LED fixtures, the lights will immediately reach full illumination so that Dobson Elementary can make big cuts to its energy usage.
“We continually strive to improve energy conservation – especially to save money for the schools,” said Robert Draughn, Surry County School District director of plant operations. “This was the main driver for working on a lighting project as one of multiple district-wide energy-saving projects.”
