Cree has been making major moves in the world of commercial lighting.
The lighting manufacturer recently outfitted student housing facilities at North Carolina State University with LED fixtures. The six-building development, Wolf Ridge at Centennial, will include the university’s first building to achieve Silver LEED certification. So far, Cree TrueWhite fixtures have been installed in two of the facilities.
Once the project is finished, there will be more than 4,000 commercial LED fixtures throughout the six buildings, including Cree’s CR22 and CR24 architectural troffers, the CR Series Light Engine and SL24 LED surface linear fixtures.
“The Wolf Ridge at Centennial student housing project called for the installation of thousands of luminaires, many of which operate 24/7,” said Pete Fraccaroli, facilities manager for campus life at NC State. “We needed an advanced lighting solution that allowed us to exceed LEED certification requirements and provide students superior color quality while delivering drastically reduced maintenance and energy costs to the university. The Cree LED lighting installed solved all of these problems.”
This application will be the second NC State project to utilize Cree commercial lighting fixtures, as the university previously installed the manufacturer’s products around campus.
Recognition for greatness
Cree is widely recognized for its strides in the lighting industry.
The company was presented with three awards at the 10th China International Exhibition and Forum on Solid State Lighting, one of the largest SSL events in the world. Representatives of the China SSL Alliance bestowed Cree with an award for “Most Influential Company in Decades.” The other two awards came from the International SSL Alliance: “2012-2013 Global SSL Industry Annual Event” and the “2013 Global SSL Industry Showcase Top 100.”
The first award from the International SSL Alliance was in regard to the introduction of the 200 lumen-per-watt XLamp MK-R LED, and the second was for Cree’s collaboration on the Shanghai Yuexing Global Harbor with Shanghai Yaming.
Jiaping Shao, sales general manager and technology director for Cree’s operations in China, said these awards represent the company’s leadership in the low voltage LED lighting industry and act as a push for further expansion.
“The global SSL market remains a largely untapped opportunity,” said Shao. “Cree wants to move the SSL market even faster than what has been experienced to date, which can bring more technology development opportunities for everyone.”
